Cause Sites – The Key to Unlocking Physical & Chronic Pain

Physical and chronic pain is something that we all experience at some point in life. Many dollars are spent every year with the goal of finding relief, yet for many, the pain persists.

When I was studying to become an Athletic Therapist, we worked on the pain sites. If you had a sore shoulder, we worked on the shoulder. If you came in with a sore back, that was where we put the focus.

What I have come to understand is that the pain site is only part of the problem.

It was when I began this journey twenty years ago that I learned about cause sites, and how without releasing them, your body won’t be able to get back to a healthy alignment. This is really apparent in people suffering with low back pain. Whether you have a herniated disc, sciatic issues, chronic tension causing pain . . . the way the fascia winds around the shins is a major contributor for back pain. I see this all the time when doing assessments on people. For most, the calves are hard and twisted, causing torquing to the pelvis which disrupts the biomechanics.

To get a better understanding, imagine carrying a ten pound weight around for a week. Your shoulder would begin to ache from fatigue. If you continued to carry the weight but had shoulder treatments to manage the pain, the effects of the treatment would be temporary, as the cause is the weight you are carrying. To permanently stop the shoulder from fatiguing, you would need to let go of the weight.

Let me explain.

1. Cause Sites vs Pain Sites

Fascia connects every cell in the body. In order for cells to be properly aligned, posture and diaphragmatic breathing have to be observed and practiced. Without this, cells begin to migrate away from proper alignment.

As fascia is here to protect you, one of its functions is to keep you upright. As most aren’t conscious of posture or breath, compression occurs from tissue collapsing into the space inside the body. The result is a body off balance. Fascia will grip with a 2000 pound per square inch force to attempt stability, but unfortunately, it also blocks blood and oxygen flow from cells.

It is these grips that need to be addressed to free the body and create balance and symmetry. Just like the 10 pound weight causing the shoulder pain, these grips are largely responsible for chronic pains at a distance from their location.

2. Tissue Temperature

The fascia requires a certain temperature for optimal flow of oxygen and nutrients to cells, as well as the removal of waste and toxins from cells. The diaphragm is like the body’s furnace; the upper chest muscles are like a space heater. In order for there to be flow to every cell, the furnace needs to be turned on at all times.

When fascia begins to cool, like ice compared to water it loses its flow and becomes dense and heavy. Adhesions develop between the layers and act as barriers to flow, resulting in cells that lack nutrition – this is a large reason for chronic pain.

Block Therapy teaches you to melt the blockages through increasing tissue temperature. This occurs through a combination of lying on the tool, the Block Buddy, and turning on the furnace.

3. Cellular Integration

Cellular migration occurs when cells move away from their rightful place under the influence of gravity, incorrect posture and unconscious breathing over time. The further the cell is from its home, the more pain it stores, as it is starved and dirty.

In the case of back pain, as mentioned above, one of the major cause sites are the calves. The lower legs and feet are the furthest from the engine, the diaphragm, and as a result, this is where the fascia is the most frozen. This drags and twists the body, pulling the cells into this system of collapse. Even if multiple hours are spent working on the back, as soon as you walk, your fascia will pull you back into the alignment that is held in the calves and feet.

The reason Block Therapy is successful in chronic pain relief is because we address the cause sites to allow cells to migrate back to their rightful position.

This is the key to releasing years of chronic pain, no matter where in the body pain is felt.

4. Posture

Most people aren’t consciously aware of their posture - especially now with our dependency on technology. Without proper postural foundations, the body falls into its internal space causing compression and ballooning as well as cellular migration away from proper alignment. 

We are like a building and require solid foundations to support our cells. Without this awareness, cells migrate away from their natural resting place and become cold, hard and dense.

5. Digestion & Detoxification

Keeping your internal space available allows for the most efficient digestion, absorption and removal of waste. The more space we can provide within, the more room there is for flow; both in and out.

If you are in chronic pain, part of the reason is your cells aren’t getting the nutrients they need to thrive. Some things you may ponder...

"But it's just a block..."

We hear this all the time... and ultimately you're right, it is a block made from bamboo!

  • This is not only bamboo, it is your therapeutic tool made from bamboo. 
  • Bamboo and bone share a similar density. This enables us to melt and release fascial restrictions all the way to the bone - where majority of the causes to our issues are located.
  • Foam, plastic or other synthetic materials are not organic. Using these materials,  especially with their methodology, will only targets the surface layers of tissue.

How is Block Therapy different than any other fascia modalities?

It all comes down to persuasion vs force.

Block Therapy persuades your tissue to melt and release. Your bodyweight and gravity with the pressure on the Block combined with proper diaphragmatic breathing causes the fascia to release.
