Knee Fat

Before I began the journey of fascia decompression, I was incredibly unhappy with the appearance of my body. I hated that I was so vain, but it’s not like women aren’t pummeled with ideologies about how we should look. I used to see the images of models and imagine what it would feel like to live in their bodies -- what I have come to understand is that what I was wishing for was freedom.

I first had the experience of freedom when working in my abdomen. For me, this was the most compressed and ballooned space in my body. I felt thick, congested, struggled with constipation and had anything but the sensuous body I so desired. When this journey began for me, it was this area that I made my initial focus and immediately captured my attention as change was immediate and rapid. Soon I began to feel like my tissue was becoming more fluid and I rejoiced in the ease of movement and flow. I sensed life in the tissue instead of something that was part of me but felt disconnected.

From there, I moved my attention to my legs. I always had strong legs, but like every other part of my body, they were thick and dense. There were so many adhesions that developed from my years of volleyball and highland dancing, and from the years I spent in the gym trying to sculpt my legs which only made the situation worse. The harder I worked to sculpt them, the harder and thicker they became.

I remember this one period when I committed to using the stairmaster everyday for 1 month. I had a pair of jeans that fit but were tight, so I put them aside and committed to an intense focus of 45 minutes of high intensity every day. I would end each session with a shirt soaked in sweat, and I was sure that I would be delighted with the results.

When the time came to try on those jeans, to my horror, they were tighter. All that work had made me bigger. I was devastated. I didn’t know where to turn. I was following the path of what I was learning about burning calories, increasing muscle mass to increase metabolism -- I was doing the work, but the results were going in the opposite direction.

Thankfully, I now understand what needs to happen for a sculpted and toned body. The better part of this understanding came that it is not so much about appearance, but the feeling of freedom inside so the systems can optimally flow. When your systems flow and your cells are receiving what they need, as well as getting rid of the waste efficiently, beauty shines from the inside out. This breeds a confidence that elevates self-esteem and impacts health and beauty alike.

Now let’s get to the issue at hand -- knee fat. When it comes to flow, alignment is key. The alignment that accompanies the expression of knee fat is hyper-extension. Also, knee fat is not fat, it’s displaced fascia. When you hyperextend the knees, you create a torsion of the limbs in equal and opposite directions. This is a response to the body tipping off balance. This creates incredible tension as the fascia adheres to the bones above and below the joint to create stability.

With hyperextension, the knee joints move in a posterior direction (meaning they move backwards) compared to correct alignment. This takes away the natural foundation to support the tissue above the knee in the front of the body. This lack of foundation for the tissue allows the accumulation of fascia above the knee, which can appear to be knee fat.

Alignment is everything. When we allow our body to tip off balance, there are many compensations that result. Knee fat is simply the expression of fascia as it relates to the hyper-extension of the knee joint. This is an easy fix, but it does take conscious awareness to overcome the habit that created this alignment.

There are 3 things that need to happen. First, you need to address the adhesions through the process of fascia decompression to release them from the bone. Next, you need to bring blood and oxygen flow into spaces previously blocked, in order to remove accumulated waste and inflate the cells with oxygen, which creates a lift and buoyancy to the tissue. Third, you need to own correct alignment to stop the negative migration of cells that result in conditions that don’t serve a healthy alignment.

On June 9th, we are sharing our next 21 Day Challenge that will address this issue. The 21 Day Pelvis, Legs & Feet program will have both a beginner and advanced version and will take you on a journey to bring your foundation into balance. One of the amazing results will be a shift in what you see as knee fat.

We already know this works, so if knee fat  is a concern for you, start here and enjoy the benefits of what this program has to offer.

Block Therapy is a self-care practice that is based on the concepts of fascia decompression. This journey began for me almost 25 years ago, and I am excited to share how it works. I first realized that the effects of gravity in our body could not only be managed, but reversed, by moving into the…

A Sway in Your Hips

I love to watch hula dancers. They move their hips so freely and emanate an immense amount of command . I, on the other hand, was a highland dancer. This is a very rigid dance where not much motion occurs in the hips. As a result of doing this for 10 years starting at age…
